Have Some Fun on the Water This Summer

Summer in Michigan allows sportsmen (or women!) to pursue any number of water-based activities, including swimming, boating, water skiing, and fishing.

Grand Valley State University, in Allendale, Michigan, has access to any number of lakes, rivers, streams, and isn’t too far away from the big lake – Lake Michigan – either. So this time of year if it’s water-based, Allendale apartments’ residents will be able to explore and enjoy it.

If you like to fish, GVSU’s Bass Anglers Club is highly ranked nationwide and has had success competing in regional and national tournaments despite its short history (it was formed in 2011). If fishing is less of a sport for you and more of a way to relax, Ottawa County alone has 40 lakes in it, ranging from 10-acre private lakes to the 2,218-acre Lake Macatawa.

Placid Wake Park in Allendale hosted wakeboarding and waterskiing events as part of the extreme sports portion of the Michigan Summer Games on June 28. The multiple lakes in the Placid Waters development are being transitioned to Action Wake Park and are specifically designed for towed water sports. There is also a fourth body of water with a cable system for learning to wakeboard. If speed and water combined are your thing, we have plenty of local opportunities.

Meadows Crossing swimmers can swim in our resort-style pool, use the university’s pool for lap swimming, diving, open swim, classes, and community events or go to any one of several local beaches. It’s all available and free to students and staff.

Even academically, you can explore the water. Grand Valley students are pursuing excellence when it comes to water sports and science at the Annis Water Resource Institute (AWRI) in Muskegon where they work to preserve local freshwater resources. These students collect and analyze the data necessary to get an accurate picture of the current ecological situation and how environmental challenges should be addressed to best maintain local resources.

Why is it important that students have the opportunity to do research and explore opportunities on the water? It’s important because one in five Michigan jobs is “blue”, and if 20 percent of our economy is water-related, experience on or with water environments will provide a critical advantage to college graduates looking for future employment.

Whether water is your playground, your muse, or your subject of study, do not miss your chance to get out and enjoy or explore it this summer at Meadows Crossing.
