Find Your Perfect Roommate at GVSU

One of the advantages of living in off-campus housing at Meadows Crossing is that all of our residents have their own bedrooms and bathrooms. Our townhouses provide much more privacy, which helps improve roommate relations. Often our residents apply to live here already knowing the people they want to live with, but sometimes we have residents who don’t already have their roommates picked out. Fortunately, there are ways to find good roommates at GVSU, and we do offer a roommate matching service for residents in this situation here at Meadows Crossing.

FAQ: Does Meadows Crossing assign roommates?

Our answer to this question is that if you already have your roommates chosen, that’s often preferable. Having a great roommate is a beautiful thing. Finding a person who is considerate, fun to be around, and who also needs a roommate can sometimes be a challenge. Choosing who to live with is a big decision, and you definitely want to make the right choice. What are some ways to find a good roommate?

The first and usually safest way to find someone you are compatible with is to know someone or have a friend recommend a roommate if they know someone who is looking. This generally ensures that the person you end up living with is compatible and friendly. Word of mouth is a great way to advertise that you are in the market for a roommate. Let your friends and acquaintances know that you’re looking. If you get a personal recommendation from a friend, you can have a general idea of what your potential roommate is like. It’s easier to avoid a bad match.

Living On Campus and Off Campus

GVSU offers My College Roomie (MCR), an online roommate-matching system for people planning to live in GVSU on-campus housing. This web-based system allows for students to match with and select roommates here at Grand Valley, and it’s one way students here make relationships as underclassmen. If you want to live off campus, you can advertise online on websites like Oodle Marketplace or even Craigslist.  Remember to be extremely cautious when posting or replying to ads online.  Don’t give away personal information and if you meet someone for the first time, meet in a public place.

If you want to live in our Meadows Crossing community and do not have a roommate, we can help you find one. We will put you in touch with other individuals who are looking for roommates, and you can see if you think you would like to live with them. We also offer a roommate matching service.

Meadows Crossings’ Roommate Matching Service

When residents use our Roommate Matching Service, we ask them to fill out a questionnaire that asks them to describe themselves, what they do to relieve stress, what kind of roommate they are looking for, as well as a variety of other questions about their personal habits, their preferred cleanliness and noise levels, if they plan to have guests over often, if they mind if their roommates have guests over often, and if they are allergic to pets.

It can be difficult for roommates to get along if one of them is a night owl while the other is an early bird, if one loves solitude and the other hates to be alone ever. Noise and mess are things some people can easily tolerate that make communal space uncomfortable for others. We use the answers to these questions to try to match our residents up with people of similar interests and habits.

Remember, be careful finding and selecting a roommate. This is a person you will be sharing your life and home with; you want it to be a good fit. College can be very time consuming and stressful. Living with your roommates shouldn’t be. Taking proactive steps in the beginning of your time living together will help take the stress out of this particular equation so you will have more energy to focus on school and enjoying your life in college.

With the appropriate tools for searching, you can find a great roommate who may become a lifelong friend. If you need our help finding a roommate here at Meadows Crossing, don’t hesitate to ask. We are always here to help our residents have a great living experience during their time at GVSU.
