How to Get through to the End of the Semester without Losing Your Mind

There are almost six weeks left of the fall 2015 semester at GVSU. Where has the time gone? Students are now facing short days, dark nights, cold temperatures, and, even more stressful, plenty of term papers and finals. It’s this stretch of time that can feel like a nightmare for many of our resident students, and so we offer some tips on how to make it through to the end of the semester without losing your mind. Here they are:

Stay organized – Hopefully, earlier in the semester you had a chance to get organized, and you put your supplies, your schedule, and your list of important projects in order. Chances are, given any system’s tendency to move from order to disorder, you haven’t maintained a military-style organization of any of these. Before you dive into these final crucial six weeks, however, it would help to sit down and put things back in place and make sure you know exactly what you still have to accomplish and complete. Get out a notepad and make some lists. It will feel good to cross some of these things off as you feel your responsibilities continue to pile on.

Study – You may be tempted to blow off some reading and research until it has to be done. It’s true that some people can do very focused work under the gun, but it’s impossible to throw together a solid research paper in one night, and your grades will reflect that if you try it. If you still have any spare time, take it, and use it to study. Procrastination is your enemy!

Eat right – You will be tempted to carb load and push through this period of time with coffee and energy drinks, but ultimately, eating healthy food is better for both your body and your brain. Try to eat at least one high nutrition meal every day, and drink plenty of water. This, along with other tips we’ve discussed, will help you maintain your energy and keep your spirits high.

Relax – When you can, take targeted time outs to lower your stress. That can mean power naps, short breaks for TV or social media, or exercising and goofing around with friends. Celebrate Thanksgiving with your family or social group. If you don’t recharge you will run out of reserves before the end of the semester.

Remember, you’re in the home stretch, and, no matter how crazy it gets, it won’t last forever. Before you know it, you’ll be on winter break and able to sleep and celebrate. We at Meadows Crossing want to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and hope all your exams and papers come back aces.
