How to Find a Great Roommate in Grand Rapids

Having a great roommate is a beautiful thing, but finding one that is cohesive, considerate, and readily available can be a difficult task.  To invite someone into your home to live with you is a big decision and you definitely want to make the right choice.  What are some ways to find a roommate in Grand Rapids?

First, and usually the safest way to find someone you are compatible with, is to know someone or have a friend recommend a roommate if they know of someone that is looking. This generally ensures that the person you end up living with is reasonable and friendly. Word of mouth is a great way to advertise that you are in the market for a roommate. Let people know around the office, in your college study group, amongst your circle of friends. If you know someone or know someone that knows someone looking, you can have a general idea of what the person is like and avoid any sticky situations.

If the vocal search isn’t giving you any results, you can advertise online or on paper.  Usually, there are forums at universities and colleges – for example the Meadows Crossing Roommate Finder – that allow you to advertise for roommates.  For instance, the Grand Valley State University Lanthorn has Classifieds specifically for roommate advertisements.  If you are out of college and looking for a great roomie in Grand Rapids, check out  This website allows you to choose your city, what you are looking for and post a specified profile to ensure the best choice for you.  There are other websites similar to this one too, such as and  Some would consider Craigslist a viable option for finding a roommate.  Remember to be extremely cautious when posting or replying to ads online.  Don’t give away personal information and if you meet someone for the first time, meet in a public place. When using the internet in any capacity, take extreme precautions.

Yet another option for finding a roommate is to post flyers to public billboards around Grand Rapids.  You can advertise what you are looking for on paper and post in coffee shops, grocery stores, and libraries.  Keep in mind specific areas around the city may be better than others depending on what you are looking for in a roommate. Kava House in Eastown is a great option to advertise for a specific age. They have a lot of business, from very young students to older business people. You may not get as many inquiries as you would online, but it is another great way to get your request out there.

Remember, use extreme caution in finding and selecting a roommate. This is a person you will be sharing your home with; you want it to be a good fit. With the appropriate tools for searching, you could find a roommate you’ll never want to leave.
