Staying Safer on Campus: Meadows Crossing’s Safe Walks

Meadows Crossing takes the safety of our tenants very seriously. Previously, we have discussed some important tips for safe off-campus apartment living near GVSU. These are important to be aware of and follow. In addition, Meadows Crossing offers our student tenants Safe Walks, another option for ensuring their personal safety.

What are Safe Walks?

A Safe Walk is a service offered every night by Meadows’ professional onsite security team. It works like this: If you feel unsafe walking to your car, walking to a friend’s apartment, or walking home, we encourage you to call our security service and request an escort home or Safe Walk. Security will meet you where you are and walk you back to your own townhome.

We are happy to offer this service; however, having nightly security on site will never replace people following basic safety measures. In our previous article we covered basic safety tips for ensuring a safer living environment, including locking your doors, leaving lights on when you’re away, avoiding opening doors to strangers, and keeping your valuables in your apartment and not in your car. Here we would like to highlight some further tips about navigating campus at night:

Avoid walking on campus alone. The safest thing you can do is to walk in a group. One person is much more approachable and vulnerable, so use Meadows Crossing’s Safe Walk service if you need it. That’s why we offer it.

Let your friends know where you’re going and when you’ll be home. It’s important that your friends or roommates are aware of your general movements. Call and text the people you know before you leave somewhere. Make sure to tell them when you’ve arrived at your destination too so they don’t worry.

Be aware of your surroundings and choose safer places to walk. This would include well lit sidewalks or parking lots and paths that are traveled by plenty of other students. When you are walking, stay alert. That’s not the time to talk on your phone or listen to music on your headphones.

Walk with confidence. People who walk with their heads held up and their backs straight are less likely to be bothered. If a stranger does approach you and you feel unsafe, don’t hesitate to make noise and draw attention to yourself or to go to the nearest shop or restaurant and seek shelter.

Do not drink and walk. If you are drunk, call a cab or a Safe Walk. If you have a friend who is drunk, escort him or her home. Drunk people are even less aware of their surroundings and more vulnerable – not just to attack, but to accidents with cars, bikes, or simply falling down and hurting themselves. It is simply unsafe to drink and walk.

Call 911 if you are in danger. If someone is following you or approaches you in a threatening way, do not hesitate to call 911 for help. Here is a list of what constitutes a 911 emergency, but it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your safety.

Meadows Crossing is a safe living complex in a safe community. We encourage all of our tenants to take the above steps to make Meadows and GVSU an even safer place for everyone to study and live. By practicing common sense and proactive behavior we can make that goal a reality.
